Dr. J's message for the week of Oct. 19-25, 2009
This week, I have several things to talk about: Homecoming, flu shots, campus area safety, and e-mail.
I'm looking forward to the Homecoming parade and pep rally Friday evening, and hope to see lots of you there. Let's hope for nice weather to show off the fantastic floats various student groups are assembling this week. I expect a lot of creativity and cleverness as the float makers illustrate the State of Pride theme and call for a Buckeye victory over the Minnesota Gophers. Parade starts at 6 p.m. and you can catch it all along the route from the Stadium to the pep rally location on the South Oval. Get the details here
Look for a special e-mail message from me this week about signing up for H1N1 flu vaccines. The university will be receiving doses in batches over the next weeks and months, and we will explain our plan to follow CDC guidelines on distribution in order of risk factors. Meanwhile, I'm encouraged by the large number of you who are getting the seasonal flu vaccine. That's not only good protection for you, but also contributes to making the whole community healthier. It's not too late-see www.flu.osu.edu
Crime prevention is always an important topic. For the most part, crime is down in the university area this fall, and some of that is due to students taking greater responsibility for their own safety and some is due to great work and cooperation between OSU Police and Columbus Police. Please continue to be aware, lock your doors and windows, report suspicious behavior to police and look out for each other. If you have not signed up to get university crime alerts by e-mail, you can do so here
Elsewhere in Buckeye Net News you will see a message about transferring your university e-mail to Buckeye Mail or another outside provider. If you're among the 20% of students who have not done this yet, please make it a priority soon. On December 31, all student accounts on the university's e-mail system will be closed and stored messages will be deleted.
Have a great week and dig out the winter coat-it's cold out there!
