Dr. J's message for Nov. 8-15, 2009

I understand that most of you have more information on coughing and hand washing etiquette than you ever thought you might need.  So, this may be the first flu message that will not include any references to hygiene. You understand the prevention tips. Instead, I just wanted to give you a brief update on the situation here at Ohio State, and offer some information that may help you keep the flu in perspective.

We are seeing H1N1 flu among our students, faculty, staff and their families.  You probably know someone who's been ill, maybe even yourself.  Almost all of these cases have been mild to moderate in intensity, much like the seasonal flu of past years, with most people recovering within a week with no lasting effects.  The number of cases has been very manageable, and classes and other university activities are continuing as normal. I don't want to minimize the discomfort of those who have been ill-the flu is never pleasant, and I do sympathize with you.

Faculty have been accommodating make-up work for students who have followed the advice to stay home and self-isolate while ill.  That strategy, along with the hygiene tips I'm not repeating, are helping keep the contagion down.  Advice on how to keep up with classwork while isolating and to transition back is here.

The university has received H1N1 vaccine in VERY limited doses for Medical Center staff who work directly with patients and pregnant faculty, staff and students.  We also received some of the nasal spray variety which was offered to students in health professions who work with patients.  A telephone pre-registration system is in place in which you can sign up to be notified when a vaccine is available for you, based on your risk category.  This may be some weeks away, depending on vaccine availability and your risk level.  If you are in a high risk category (pregnant, caring for an infant, immune-suppressed, suffering from a chronic respiratory condition), we advise that you be alert to opportunities to obtain the vaccine through local public health departments, which are the only places it is currently available.  Read more about the vaccine process here

If you've clicked on the links in this message, you'll see that they all go to www.flu.osu.edu , which is where you can find answers to most of your questions.  If not, there's a place to ask as well: buckmd@studentlife.osu.edu

Do what you can to stay well, and try not to stress about the flu. Knowledge is power, food and exercise are good, and sleep is very important.  And wash your hands...couldn't help myself.
