Dr. J's message for Jan. 8-15

The start of a new quarter keeps many students busy with day to day adjustments, catching up with friends, and getting used to new classes.  I hope winter has kicked off well for you.  While you are settling in to 2012, I encourage you to think about your long term journey and how your experience at Ohio State can help you prepare for the next phase of your life.

Obviously, there will come a day when you take all you have learned and embark on a career. And it's our "job" to provide you with the support and resources you need to be successful.

We are working on some exciting innovations in the area of career services, and I want to give you a sneak preview of what you can expect in the fall.  Partners from across the university, including Student Life and the University Career Services Committee, are developing a multi-faceted program, called Buckeye Careers, designed to ensure that all students have access to the best possible career services and support.  Buckeye Careers will not replace the career services currently offered by individual colleges; it is built to enhance the overall career development experience and offer additional resources.

One of the key ways to learn more about a potential career is through an internship.  Buckeye Careers will help students learn more about, search for, and acquire internship positions.  Many college career services offices offer similar resources as well.  We will also assist local, national, and global organizations in creating new internship programs, thus increasing the number of positions available to Ohio State students.

Another component of Buckeye Careers will be the Buckeye Careers Network, Ohio State's online resource connecting students with jobs, internships, co-ops, and career opportunities.  This centralized database will be searchable by a number of criteria and will make it easier for both students and employers to make connections.

Finally, we want to make sure that you are choosing the best possible career to fit your interests, skills, and passions.  Our OnPACE program will feature a series of modules and other resources that can guide you along your career path, from identifying your interests to getting prepared for life after college.

I look forward to sharing more about Buckeye Careers in the coming months.

Speaking of careers, mark your calendar for the Career and Job Fair, to be held Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Ohio Union.  This event, sponsored by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and co-sponsored by the Office of Student Life, is open to all students, including undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, so brush up on your networking skills, make sure your resume is up-to-date, and take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about 100+ diverse organizations.

In the meantime, no matter where you are along your journey, your college's career services office or Career Connection  can help you with any aspect of your career development....even if you're taking the first step.

Have a fantastic week and don't forget about two great events on Thursday, Jan. 12 in the Ohio Union:  the Off-Campus Housing Fair from noon-5 p.m. in the Performance Hall and the Winter Involvement Fair from 6-9 p.m. in the Archie M. Griffin Grand Ballroom.
