Dr. J receives MLK Jr. Dream Award

Ohio State Vice President for Student Life Javaune Adams-Gaston, Ph.D., recently received the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. "Dream" Award from the university's Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) Frank W. Hale, Jr. Black Cultural Center. The honor recognizes her commitment to service, vision, and leadership for Ohio State and beyond.

"As we examine the life, times and words of Dr. King, we try to find a campus or community person that embodies those principles he stood on and for.  This year, we felt that Dr. Javaune Adams-Gaston fit our criterion the best because of everything she has done in Student Life (on the campus of The Ohio State University) and in the community," said Lawrence Williamson, Jr., Director of the Hale Black Cultural Center. "We are fortunate to have her at The Ohio State University.  To our committee, she was the most obvious selection for the 2012 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dream Award."

The annual award is given to a university and/or community person who has achieved extraordinary accomplishments in terms of dedication, commitment, leadership, and vision to The Ohio State University, the City of Columbus, or the community-at-large.

The award is also accompanied by one of the most prestigious honors bestowed on anyone from the Hale Center/ODI - the Kente Cloth draping.

Past MLK Jr. Dream Award winners are Dr. Frank W. Hale, Jr., Dr. William E. Nelson, Mr. John Williams, Dr. Mac Stewart, and Dr. Valerie Lee.
